Packing a thorough Bug Out Bag can be an organizational nightmare for the average person. To fix that problem, Pelican Strategic created an easy, lightweight, but tough, tool that fits any backpack.
Located in Lafayette, La., partners Travis Bartlett, Paul Capdepon and John Lambert launched the company when they recognized a need to help people who might be organizationally challenged, or who simply want a quick, easy way pack their necessities in a grab-and-go bag.
Meet the Rigid Insert Panel – MOLLE, otherwise known as the RIP-M. Designed to make organization easy, it is a customizable MOLLE panel that can be inserted into any bag, and is rigid enough to not slump over from the weight of whatever is attached to it.
Because we liked the concept, and we feel organization helps any family in an emergency situation, PBN purchased a RIP-M and tested it for a leisure trip into the mountains.
In truth, we love this product.
As shoppers know, the most marketed feature of any rucksack is the size of the main, top-loaded pocket. Thus, packing a backpack with everything you need to survive an emergency becomes the science of an organized pile.
This is where RIP-M does its best work.
Packing a ruck with materials in the order of importance, or what needs to be available when in a critical situation, is generally a bottom-up strategy.
Survival experts like Creek Stewart advise people to start packing bags with items such as clothing and bedding on the bottom, then shelter and food on top. In the middle there are many smaller items that may fair better in pouches, or else risk getting lost in the nooks and crannies of the stuff crammed into the compartment.
For our trip, we tested the RIP-M in our “grey man” bag, a large Kelty hiking pack, but keep in mind, it’s sized perfectly for any average backpack.
With the RIP-M, we were able to organize our pack and reduce the pile. It was a real convenience to grab one piece of equipment that essentially contains much of gear we need without digging in and around the main compartment.
Measuring 15 x 10.75 x 0.188 inches, and weighing just 12 ounces, the sturdy polyethylene product fit perfectly while allowing room for everything else.
We detected no real weight difference or mobility issues. And we saved time and effort.
When we needed access to gear at the bottom of our bag, we simply pulled the RIP-M panel out (and all the gear attached to it), and slid it back in.
Pelican Strategic designed the RIP-M for military, law enforcement, first responders, and sports enthusiasts of all kinds. And it delivered on its claim that essential gear was “organized and accessible” whenever we needed it.
With a few extras, the RIP-M can be mounted inside vehicles, storage cases, and safe doors by using the RIP-M’s various “hook and loop” accessories, and one-inch straps with side release buckles.
Hardware can also be mounted to the RIP-M by drilling mounting holes and then securing it with an appropriate fastener and spacers as needed.
The basic RIP-M retails for $35, though Pelican Strategic often runs promotions. Customers also get discounts when they purchase three at a time.
