TUALATIN, Ore. – It’s clear that the survival industry does not have a lot of products designed specifically for women.
Name any of the key survival gear clothing lines – 511 Tactical, Crye Precision, Arc’Teryx, Propper – and shoppers will find that the brands either don’t make any tactical clothing or products for women, or they have a limited token product line for the fairer sex.
Sure, we get it. The market demand for tactical clothing or products for women may be limited. So when a leading knife company launches a product line designed by a woman for women, and the designer is a legitimate female survival star, it is news.
Enter Karen Hood.
She set out to create a unisex chopper that was friendly towards both women and men.
“My late husband, Ron Hood, designed a chopper but it is not one that I carry easily,” Karen explains. “It was a bit too long for me so I designed one shorter with the geometry to help chop with as little effort as possible but without being too light or too heavy.”
Now the Columbia River Knife and Tool company is releasing the KHC Karen Hood Chopper outdoor knife. Designed by Hood, the company says it’s a product of over 20 years of wilderness survival expertise.
And considering that Hood worked side-by-side with her late husband Ron Hood in the Survival Industry, there is little reason to doubt the claim’s legitimacy. Hood is the editor and chief of Survival Quarterly and owns survival.com. She has proved herself in the backwoods.
And now that she is on the design team of a respected knife company, it’s worth taking notice.
The knife has a substantial nine inch blade poised at the perfect 12 degree drop to maximize chopping power. It also has an corrosion-resistant powder coated finish that packs neatly away in a reinforced nylon sheath.
The tough resin-infused fiber handle holds up to serious beat downs—and the company says “Karen would know, she’s the survival professional behind the renowned ‘Woodsmaster’ instructional series and has weathered her fair share of backwoods adventures.”
This knife can compete with machetes and hatchets on many backwoods jobs.
The Karen Hood Chopper knife manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $375.00
