As cold and ice grip large portions of the United States, it’s an appropriate time to revisit tips for surviving life-threatening weather from the dedicated survival and homesteading bloggers.
We’ve all heard the stories: family drives to see grandma get’s caught in freakish winter storm and freezes to death waiting for help. Or the hiker that decided to enjoy a snowy trek into the mountains and freezes to death.
Basically, we don’t want our readers to suffer that fate, so we explored leading homestead and survival blogs for advice, sometimes dipping in to the vaults for oldies but goodies.
Here’s what we found:
Prepper Central starts us off with five very quick and basic tips for surviving the cold by using C.O.L.D. to stay warm.
For a quick primer on surviving extreme cold weather The Organic Prepper offers a quick overview for light to severe hypothermia, what to do in the car and at home.
If you prefer to listen instead of read, Dr. Joe Alton and his wife/nurse/better half Amy, otherwise known as Doom and Bloom and the authors of the influential Survival Medicine Handbook have a two-part podcast on the subject. Part One discusses surviving hypothermia, while Part Two discusses surviving hypothermia, blizzards and avalanches.
Another good source for medical advice is the Hogwarts School of Grid Down Medicine and Wizardry. Here they discuss some basics about avoiding and treating hypothermia and frostbite. The illustrations are priceless.
And Bio Prepper tells us how our blood reacts to cold.
